江戸は吉原、色欲＜いろ＞でわきたつ花街遊郭。華やかに見えるその世界は、女たちにとっては借金、強欲、折檻、嫉妬にまみれた「苦界＜くがい＞」と呼ばれる地獄…。そこに生きる女郎・牡丹＜ぼたん＞は、ここでしか生きられぬ身なら、たとえ地獄でも自分らしく生きるしかないと気を張り続ける。そしていつか抜け出してみせると心に決めていた。自分を拾い、育ててくれた女郎・散り菊のように…。楼主からの折檻や、牡丹にライバル心を燃やす胡蝶＜こちょう＞の嫌がらせに耐え、見店＜みせ＞の一、二を争う女郎となっていく牡丹。しかし、かつての想い人との再会と、慕っていた散り菊の消息を知ることで、牡丹の生きる道が大きく変わっていくことに…!!
